Scott Fry, I absolute appreciate your perspective and bringing this up. And I respect your choice in wanting to use person first language. I actually intentionally choose ‘autistic son’ rather than ‘son with autism’. My thinking is in line with the response to the first comment on this article: https://neurodiversitysymposium.wordpress.com/what-is-neurodiversity/
When my son is old enough to understand autism / neurodiversity, and that he is impacted by it, I will let him choose how to talk about it and will talk about it in the same way. But for now this is how I’ve decided to address it.
Again, I appreciate and respect yours and others’ viewpoints on this, and I don’t feel there’s a right or wrong. We’re all right, for our own reasons. Thanks again.
